"Development is inevitable.
Bad development is the norm.
Good development is completely attainable."

Beyond the private space: bringing design to the community.

In the Hudson River Valley, in the Adirondacks, in the Berkshires, on the western slope of the Sierras – in all the most wonderful and desirable parts of the country, pressure to build on the remaining land is enormous. For want of a coherent plan for development, most subdivision and building takes place in small, localized, precedent-setting steps that fail to take into account the fragile nature of these environments and the social consequences of rapid change.

Creating the kind of community where people want to live begins with thoughtful land use planning and development. Existing codes and zoning regulations are based on out-dated theories and practices, and on demographics that no longer apply. Re-thinking these planning tools is an opportunity to re-shape the life of the community in a way that preserves the quality of life for those who live here now, and for those who will live here in years to come.

New technologies have made possible new development practices that can cope with contemporary issues such as storm damage, water quality and availability,  air quality, and the provision of  parks, schools and other community spaces . Better doesn’t necessarily mean more expensive, it means more thoughtful.

Ann Brooke Design Inc and its associates offers a broad set of consulting services, including:
  • working with developers, engineers and builders on best and most cost-effective practices for site development
  • working with municipalities and institutions to develop environmentally and socially sensitive codes and planning guidelines
  • wetland and native plant preservation and restoration
  • stormwater management and recycling
  • wildlife control and management
  • preparation of hand-drawn renderings and CAD documents for presentation.

"Design has a life beyond the private realm. Just as each person has a story, so does each community have a story that can be expressed  through careful land use and building."
